It is hard to believe that it has been nearly 2.5 years since the Knollwood Matters Summit, where residents came together to discuss what they like about living in Knollwood and what issues are affecting the neighborhood. Since then, we've had an increase in social activities and additional community meetings to discuss our neighborhood.

Two of our core action items of our Community Vision are to maintain and improve the landscaping of all three entrances to the subdivision and to pursue projects that enhance the attractiveness of the neighborhood's natural resources.

Please join us for a fun evening on Friday, October 3, where we will discuss and share ideas on how to beautify Knollwood. We will meet at 7 p.m. at Knollwood Pool. Light refreshments and snacks will also be served. At this meeting, we will have on display some preliminary sketches for signage and landscape improvements.

Here's a short 2-minute video from our first community workshop, Knollwood Matters Summit, held on May 15, 2012.

Membership Renewal – October 2013

10/7/2013

Written by Frank Allgood,
KNA President

It's hard to believe that it's been 12 months since the Knollwood Neighborhood Association began its first year of membership. October marks the annual $40 renewal for membership in the Association, and we hope you will continue to give and encourage other neighbors to join.

Over the past year, we've hosted three community events. The Fall Festival was a big success, and this year's festival will take place this Sunday, Oct. 13. For pictures of last year's Fall Festival, click here. After rain washed out the 1st Annual Knollwood Easer Egg Hunt on March 23, we rescheduled the event for March 30 and had more than 25 children and their families participate. See pictures here.

And finally, in July, we held our 1st Annual July 4th Parade, where young children, parents,  senior adults and their pets marched around Gail, Locke, Brockman and Anders roads in  decorated bikes, wagons and golf carts. The parade concluded with an ice cream social at Knollwood Pool.

These free community events have done a fantastic job in bringing neighbors closer together.

Meanwhile, in our first year, we have been frugal with our money. And there's a reason for that.

As of Oct. 1, the Association has $3,135.54. I challenge you: What can do with twice that amount? To reach that, it is as simple as renewing your $40 commitment.

If you are familiar with IPTAY, Clemson's athletics booster club, the club was founded in 1934 and the acronym once stood for "I Pay Ten A Year." Prices have risen since then, but you get the idea. What started out small has grown into one of the largest collegiate booster clubs in the nation with tens of thousands of members.

Our Association is not a homeowners association. As I have said in community forums before, our Association is more like a "foundation," identifying projects or need, and funding them.

This brings me to three action items we want to accomplish in 2013-14:

Picture
New Signage
Currently, Knollwood only has signage at one entrance. We are exploring the addition of pillars at each entrance along Knollwood Drive, and how we may improve the existing sign on Edgewood Drive.

As an example, see the photo to the left of Avondale Heights in Simpsonville. This one actually has a lamp post on top of the pillar. Using the same type of brick used in the Knollwood sign on Edgewood Drive, the idea is to install beautiful, uniform entrances into the neighborhood with nice landscaping.

Picture
Event Signage
When there's a community event, we often advertise using poster board on lampposts. Rain and wind easily destroy these signs. The curve of the lampposts make hanging signs difficult.

By having designated areas for posting events at each entranceway, we would have a nice flat surface to advertise events. The examples to the right are found in the Holly Tree and River Walk subdivisions in Simpsonville. The Holly Tree example places announcements behind locked glass and is lit at night.

Picture
Anders Avenue Cul-de-Sac
Located near Knollwood Pool, the Anders Avenue Cul-de-Sac is overgrown with weeds and brush. What we aim to do is clear out 3- to 5-feet from the curb, install a heavy-duty weed barrier, mulch, and plant new vegetation to make the area a welcoming place to visit.

Thank you in advance for renewing your membership in the Knollwood Neighborhood Association. If you are a new member, welcome aboard! Together we will accomplish many things that are truly special for our neighborhood.

Knollwood Fall Festival

The Knollwood Fall Festival will take place on Sunday, Oct. 13, beginning at 5 p.m. with an Egg Hunt. That's right! A Halloween Egg Hunt. Eggs will be filled with Halloween candy and toys. The Egg Hunt is for children in 5th grade and under.

But wait! That's not all!

We will have hayrides, games, popcorn and hot chocolate for kids of all ages (even adults!). We will open up the pool deck so adults may socialize and enjoy refreshments under the pool shade cover.

Come meet your neighbors and enjoy a nice autumn evening out!

See you on Oct. 13! Check out photos from last year's Fall Festival.

Knollwood Pool Year in Review

10/4/2013

Picture
The 2013 pool season finished with 55 members (families), including both residents and non-residents of Knollwood. Despite the rainy summer, the refreshing waters, snack bar and spacious pool deck were enjoyed by all.

New this year, Knollwood Pool added lounge chairs and worked on expanding the parking lot. Members maintained the current flower beds, added mulch, and refreshed the pool deck and bathrooms with seasonal cleaning and painting. The excellent staff of guards did a great job maintaing the grounds throughout the year.

Knollwood Pool hosted several events throughout the year, including an opening and closing party. The opening party is a free swim for everyone, giving folks an opportunity to experience all the fun membership brings. This year's closing party featured an inflatable water slide, pizza party and a very popular silent auction. There was also a Life Guard and Swim Team Reunion, and various "mock" swim meet events that were also a huge success.

As for the swim team, Knollwood partnered again with the Planters Row and Brookside communities in Mauldin. Home meets were held at Brookside this year as the team competed in the Gold Division.

This year there were 10 KNWP swimmers that competed in the Championships and Classics – the Swim Association Invitational League's end-of-season meets for the top swimmers in Greenville County. Championship swimmers from KNWP  : Tucker Cribbin, Celine Crum, Thomas Dotson, Benjamin Goodlett, Reed Horton, Gabriel Kiser, David Melton, Jesse Murray, Mary Lynn Whitacre and Charlie Wolfe. In Classics, we had: Celine Crum, Gabriel Kiser and Jesse Murray.

Although not final, we're told that next year Knollwood may get to host home swim meets!

Looking ahead to next year, Knollwood Pool is looking to add additional gravel to the parking lot, re-strap repairable lounge chairs, purchase new chairs, and repair the low diving board, which broke toward the end of the season.

Anyone interested in more pool news or membership information should contact Carol King, President and Treasurer of the Knollwood Heights Community Pool Association. She may be reached at [email protected] or 864-627-9164.

A big "thank you" to current pool members for their continued support. Be sure to invite your neighbors to join and/or support the pool in the 2014 season. Let's make it the best ever!
